Sludge happens. It does not need a whole layer of it to sink to the bottom of the pan. It's not as if the pan has little dams in it to catch the sludge. Though the floating pickup does let it build up, without circulating, until the next oil change.

The 10% bypass filter WILL filter all the oil, but it will take ten trips.

You have sludge because the oil has not been changed frequently enough, whether detergent or non.

The pan was built that way because it was easier(and cheaper) to build it that way.

You want sludge? Ever pulled the plug and had to poke through the drain hole to get anything to flow? Ever pull a pan and had 1/2" of lead from the bearings laying in the pan? Black and liquid, Meh.

Anybody got a owners manual with non-detergent change interval? 500 miles? 1,000?
