The late 251 pump uses an aluminium housing with sealed bearings, maybe the shaft is shorter? The M601 uses a deep dish bottom pulley to line up with the forward mounted low pump, so if the new pump is very short you would need a straight bottom pulley, couldn't use a recessed one as the timing cover would be in the way, so that would limit how short the new pump could be.
