i purchased my 3500 dodge thinking overkill in needed suspension and driveline would equal reliable safe transport. reality is that the gmc product is better in both terms of reliability and economy. unless you are towing monster loads, the cummins / dodge is not worth it. the older cummins trucks are likely better, but they rust out and can't hold a candle to the gmc fit and finish.
