I'm no GMC expert, but my '67 Chevy 1/2 ton (also made in an identical body with a GMC logo) has a 4-speed where 1st is a real low "granny" gear and you always start in 2nd unless you're crawling through the woods off-road. The shift lever moves about twice as far for that granny gear as for the other gears. I've also heard it called "compound low", as if there's another countershaft in there somewhere. Anyway, I'm thinking it might be basically the same gearbox as your 3-speed, but with the granny gear added on the low end. But in this PW, it has to be a misprint.
