So, that's one option: Leave the rear PTO shaft running rearward, hook it to a hydraulic pump and then put a hydraulic motor on the back of the MU2.

Practical or not, I 'd say that is plausible enough for me to march onward with mounting the tranny to the engine.

I'd still like to know how to verify that a PTO gear really fits. It seems like there should be some science to matching the gears, and that skipping that step could set one up for wear and failure.

Are PTOs sensitive to what is the top and what is the bottom? The way it is shown in the photo is upside down relative to how it was mounted on the other side when I bought the trans. The Dana tag is right side up in the orientation I have in the photo. Shift rail on top seems natural to me, but I note the whole thing should be submerged in oil based on the fill plug location on the transmission.
