From what I understand (somebody will correct me if I'm wrong), the military transmissions bolt patterns remained the same from WC's through M37's for for both crash boxes and synchros, for interchangeability. Since the PW was largely based on the military vehicles they stayed the same in the early years, probably using a lot of surplus parts and definitely the existing tooling.

However, it was Dodge, for some reason, that decided to change the bolt pattern and case dimensions on the PW's when they introduced the civilian NP420. Don't know why, especially when the guts are identical? Change for the sake of change? Or perhaps, they didn't want people by-passing them for military surplus parts?

Crazy, would love to know the real story behind it.

Clark
