I usually have the top and lever on the trans, good handle to jiggleitalittleit'llgo in.

In my younger days, I would have guide pins, sit on the seat , grab the shift lever, lift and slide, then step on the clutch for the last inch.

Worst thing that may/have happen/ed is that the mechanic leaves the tranny hanging by the input shaft, bending the center area of the disc. Disc than wobbles, rubbing on the plate/flywheel, and won't disengage fully. Can't tell until the test drive, then have to do the whole job over. Guide pins help that LOTS.
