I always put the trans in first (or park on an auto) And the t-case in low range with front hubs locked in. And set the brake. Even then I always stop in 10-15 miles and end up taking a couple links slack out of the chains! Always tie down around the axle housings and not the frame or "tie down eyes or hooks" and never by a hitch! The bouncing of the body will wear and break chains / straps when on rough roads, tying the axles places the hold force solid through the tires and the body of the vehicle can undulate freely making for a smoother ride on the trailer and towing rig. Always have the front and rear tie downs pulling against each other either trying to pull outward fore and aft or inward fore and aft, cris-crossing chains on each end is OK but a chain failure can cause the vehicle to shift sideways. Also remember that any external device, ie snow plow, loader bucket, etc. must be tied down too!
