I'm glad the old girl refused to start until you dumped the oil pan. Probably a torn diaphagm in the fuel pump. I've never had a problem with mine, but it's one of those things I think about. If it happened on the road I could fill the sump with gas and I'd never know it until the engine locked up. I guess it's one reason to consider an electric fuel pump - perish the thought!
