Tim, if you really want to "do your own thing" --there is older WC factory precedent.
In trying to determine the official pattern for bed board replacement in my 1942 WC53 Carryall floor, I carefully photographed the originals, numbering, notes, etc. There were only two metal top strips that covered joints out in the middle, equidistant from the sides. All the others were random widths, tongue-in-groove, covering the floor.
It appears that in the war time factory assembly line they laid out wall to wall boards and then routed, jigged, and drilled out the holes for attachment to the bed cross members. Some boards are 3", some 2", and others 6"+ --no symmetry!
I'm tempted to do the same.
