I've been told it's next to impossible to cut fire wood on FS or DNR land in Western Washington these days. Most of the roads are gated or kelly-humped anyway, but even so you can't really get a firewood permit. If they catch you on a FS or DNR road with wood in your truck, they assume you stole it. Same with shake bolts. It's a crazy world. When I was a kid growing up in Seattle, on a summer's night you'd see the smoke from the slash burns making it look like the Olympic Mountains were erupting. Now they make you leave perfectly good wood on the ground just to feed the mushrooms. It's a wonder they even let people walk on the endangered dirt any more.
