The loose nut on the wire connection you mention is the fuel shut off solenoid. To activate the solenoid, thus opening the fuel line supply, 12 volts is supplied to the wire that was loose. When you shut down, 12 volts is removed and the solenoid closes the fuel shut off plunger. There is also a manual fuel shut off on the side of the VE pump.

SO: Sure is that wire was real loose, vibration could cause it to loose contact with the fuel solenoid and do a un-commanded shut down. But I must note, that your description as I read it does not follow that wire causing the problem......but maybe ??
