Any rig, even a passenger car with decent clearance, should be able to make it later in the season after the snow is all gone and people have cut the logs and moved any big rocks. It's always worth calling the Forest Circus first, but bear in mind they will always tell you things are way worse than they are. Unless it's gated, it will be fine to drive. It's been a few years since I've driven it, but I doubt it's gotten any worse. Yes, there have been some big fires around there (they don't try to put them out any more) but locals always travel with a chain saw and any fallen trees will be cleared out within a few weeks of the snow melting. Some of the dead-end side roads off of the Magruder road can get pretty adventurous, but they're worth exploring if you have a 4x4. Any road that goes up to an old lookout site is worth checking out just for the view.

Before you go, you might want to read up on the Magruder massacre. It's a pretty interesting story in lots of different ways.
