No reason why not! Think about all the rear axles that lubricate the wheel bearings with gear oil carried along the axle shaft! As long as the seals are designed well to hold the liquid they will actually lubricate better than grease and are less likely to cause failure such as when the grease freezes and the bearings sling it away causing less than adequate lubrication. 85-90 or 85-140 oils have a liquid viscosity at low temperatures that exceeds most axle grease.
