It was standing in line for hours while a pair of "they can't fire me, I'm union" clerks sat behind their windows and competed with each other to see who could move more slowly, deriving particular joy from being able to tell you that you were in the wrong line and you needed to go stand in that other one. All the while, you stared at that "government green" until even now it makes you want to turn and flee.
