Wire from start/solenoid to coil? Or 3wire alt?

If there is a wire from the side of the solenoid to the coil so the coil get 12v when cranking, it might be feeding back through. That wire should go to it's own connection. Or the white wire on a 3 wire Deelco alt can do the same. It needs a diode in it, about $1. Or just leave it off. If it is an old/rebuilt alt, it will have enough residual magnetism ti get itself perking.

Solenoids may look the same, but there are about 3 different ones. Big lugs are the same on all, not polarity sensitive. On some one of the little lugs is a ground, and needs to go through a neutral safety switch, or attach a ground wire there.

But on some the coil is grounded through the case. On these, the second little lug is to put battery voltage directly to the coil, going around the ballast resistor. Makes a hotter spark when the cranking pulls the battery voltage down. If you have only one small lug, with two wires on it, try leaving off the one to the coil, or just guess, try leaving off one at a time.
