I doubt there is enough clearance between the oilite bushing and the drum shaft that rides in it to allow much gas to escape. Braden must have thought so, too. It must be the seals on the worm shaft in the bearing retainer housings that the vent is intended to protect.
By the way, "L" refers to the light aluminum housing. Many parts are shared between the MU-2 and the LU-2.
