You guys keep ignoring the reality those people paid their own way to the US, they were sponsored by somebody already here, and there was only minor local welfare with no Judge saying give out more. There also weren't Federal contractors getting fat from importing people arriving without incentive to work and improve themselves.
The old neighborhoods are gone, be it Chew Street in Allentown or Hudson Ave in Rochester and the people who came there to get a start moved to the suburbs and bought the idea their kids shouldn't need to get their hands dirty to earn a living. The past has passed and we don't get a do over.
If you don't know the history of yesterday you'll be unable to survive tomorrow.
