Yes, I can sure see how that would be, and it would be a tough design to carry the loads without a conventional axle tube. It seems like it would need a large and tricky forging to be strong enough for a heavy truck. One advantage for something slow like a Mog, though, would be that you could do a final drive gear reduction and keep the upstream parts of the drive train lighter. And of course you wouldn't have the annoying torque pulsations on curves and restrictive turning angle of a simple U-joint like the M35s have. Sealing might be easier too, with standard rotating shaft seals rather than wipers or rubber boots.

I think it's very interesting to look at early automotive designs because you can see lots of different engineers and mechanics considering every possible solution to the problem, before they settled on the standard mechanisms we have today. Some of those original solutions were good too, or were better suited to the manufacturing processes of the time.
