After his stint he moved up here and like many he went for the quiet life. He is self employed, has kids and is a great guy, but on those long cold nights when we are out on a search he does open up a bit and the impact that war had on him is quite clear. Lost fiends , stupid decisions by superiors and the general waste of it all. This guy works at staying mentally healthy and does not talk about what he went through or saw on a constant basis. We talk in those dark Hours because I can relate and have been through my own meat grinder.
Some folks are tougher than others, some feel more than others. Some have a valid reason for not being able to work, or hold down a job ,or have a relationship.
Others are just plain a waste of skin.
Unless you know a guys history it is not fair to make a judgement.
There was a homeless guy that I had little respect for. Why does he drink? Why can he not hold down a job?
I later found out the guy lost his whole family over a few months to different causes - all unexpected and all pretty brutal. After that I figured he was managing the best that he could.
