A timing light would diagnose/eliminate the vacuum advance, but they don't usually cause much grief. I suspect you do not have a timing light? How do you know the timing is right? Many guys get it running and warmed up, then advance to max rpms, then retard it back down soem. Or use a vacuum gauge to do the same.
Can you cobble up a rubber hose to the advance unit, and suck on it with the engine running?
Do you have a big vaccuum leak at the intake manifold, or the vacuum hose for the wipers?
And lots of"professionally rebuilt" carbs are screwed up too. More likely than a vac advance unit being the cause.
