I would agree that if you are trying to modernize one of these trucks the axles are probably the most important.

Strength aside, the steering, gearing, alignment, and wheel availability are all big limitations of the stock axles. However changing them means redoing all those things, steering being the most complicated.

Cost wise I don't think it's cheaper to re-use the stock axles unless you are just re-using them. By the time you rebuild and upgrade either axle the cost for a custom axle is almost the same for something probably as strong if not stronger. I easily have $3-4K in each of my axles before wheels and tires, and other than that BUDD look, it's still stuck on 4.88 gears with an unusual yoke design and limited parts availability.
