White out- the crap in a bottle you paint over typing mistakes with. If you don't use it solder will run and adhere.
Any chance you have some copper nails you can run through the holes from the handle side and then solder it up?
Sounds like you'd be best off with some kind of rivet in there to begin, even if the rivet ain't tight.
Remember solder will only bridge .020 gap.
Rivet, fill and grind should be eaisest, even if you use copper building wire to make the rivets.
