Here's the deal. Brand new 5 million dollar church auditorium. Most walls are made up of 16"x8" smooth stone/block, similar to cinder blocks only much finer texture/porosity. Problem is the manufacturer of the stone sent stones of differing sheens, which when looked at from an angle gives a hideous checkerboard effect during certain times of the day depending upon sunlight. Some blocks are totally dull, others are somewhat glossy. Looking straight at them its hardly noticeable.

Nothing seems to "dull" the shiney blocks. They have tried acids, strippers, solvents, sanding. Haven't tried any media blasting.

Also can't seem to apply any clear finishes that would make the sheen "even/uniform". Shiny blocks stay shiny, the dull ones stay dull.

The goal is to have all the blocks be of uniform sheen. Dull is preferable, but some shine would be acceptable. Also the walls have to hold up to being touched without leaving behind handprints/markings.

Architects & CMaR are waiting until stained glass windows are installed to see if reduced natural light alleviates the problem.

Any thoughts?
