He had recently purchased a free standing wood lathe. For the sake of expediency he mounted the motor to the wall of his shop.

So one Sunday moring, all dressed for church, waiting for his wofe to get ready, goes out to finish sand the outside of a bowl. Tie gets wound in-GAG! and he puts hios arm on the wall to resist getting his neck wound in too. Pushing against the wall, the lathe winds itself away from the motor loosening the drive belt, our turner can unwind some necktie, until the lathe falls back into position tightening the belt. Rinse, repeat, until somebody wonders what that rhythmical thumping is coming from the shop.

But yeah, gloves are to prevent chafing, not as protection around power tools. I lost a thumbnail when I swear I never got my thumb within an inch of the V-belt. And now I understand Mechanics gloves, tight elastic.
