Most commonly the imprint of the chevron on the ground is pointing in the direction the vehicle came from. However, I have also seen a combination, rears mounted conventionally, ie provide lug cleaning when the vehicle is going forward, and fronts mounted reversed, so that the cleaning occurs when backing(out of mudhole).
The direction makes a large difference. I learned this many years ago on a '41 IH H. My aunt had mounted a repaired tire on backward, my father and I took the tractor out with a bushhog to cut thistle, on the exit of a stream crossing we got bogged down, the tire put on backwards was completely packed whereas the tire mounted correctly was squishing the mud out the sides when it came in contact with the ground. Visually very easy to see how it worked. That afternoon we swapped the backward tire around.
