Another way to look at it is that the spider gear is an idler gear. The size of the idler gear doesn't matter, only the size of the gears it connects. Since the spider connect the two side gears and they are the same size, the ratio is 1:1. The spider does not turn when the vehicle is driven straight. When the vehicle turns, one wheel will slow down by the same amount the other wheel speeds up, to the point that if one wheel stops the other will be spinning twice its normal speed. This is why it's important to be careful when spinning wheels when a vehicle is stuck. When the speedo reads 40mph, the tire is spinning at the speed it would if the vehicle was doing 80mph.
