The only difference between #2 home heating oil, #2 diesel taxed or untaxed is the color of the dye they put in it.
The red dye is injected into the fill pipe going into the truck from the rack at the oil terminal. That stuff is so potent, the DOT can find one gallon of Red fuel in a tank with 100 gallons of taxed fuel.
DO NOT USE KEROSENE FOR DIESEL FUEL!!! Kerosene lacks the lubricant value of #2 oil, and will ruin an engine right quick. If you absolutely have to use kerosene, pour in 1 quart of 40 weight oil per 5 gallons of kerosene. The motor oil will protect you from scored sleeves and ruint injector pumps, as long as you don't make a steady diet of it.
There are a lot of whacko ideas out there for diesel fuel, like mixing in used motor oil, but you need to be careful. The DOT fines for untaxed fuel will kill you, and they ain't real keen on the used oil trick either. Them tax collectors is nasty bastards.
