my 2¢ worth: self etching primer will only work on bare metal. POR 15 will work well, but will scratch after a while and it needs special prep to paint over. Best solution is to have a thin coat of truck bed liner sprayed onto bare metal, then paint color of choice. Paint will wear off after a while, but will wear indefinately. Also a good sound deadiner and I don't think anyone will notice the coating is anything but original.
