Are you sure about that?

I've never heard of a Pierce V-16. When Pierce first introduced their V-12, it wasn't out-performing their straight eight. That's one of the reasons they hired Ab Jenkins to drive for them at Bonneville. This was before he started driving for the Duesenberg Brothers and Auburn/Cord.

Auburn did have a V-16 that never made it into production. A prototype was found some years back. Someone was building a front drive Cord prototype around that engine. Before the V-16 went into production, it was turned into a V-12 and Auburn retained rear wheel drive, while the expensive front wheel drive went into E. L. Cord's more expensive namesake mark. The Lycoming 12 has the cylinder banks at 45 degrees which is correct for a V-16, but a V-12 should be 60 degrees. That didn't stop American LaFrance from using the Lycoming 12 after Auburn went out of production.
