The whole deal on the military vehicles is/was to keep the track the same front and back so the wheels follow properly. Then if you put duals on both ends you can cross creeks on single log bridges with the log partially between the 2 wheels - if that makes sense. I've seen a picture of it, will post if I can find it. Apparently with the duals both ends even train lines can be negotiated, but I guess that depends on the gauge.
