Go back to basics.
Remove the distributor cap but leave the rotor on. Remove #1 spark plug and put your thumb over the hole. Crank the engine over with the starter and watch where the rotor is pointing when #1 farts under your thumb. Remember it as on the hands of a clock - like 5 o'clock or 9 o'clock. It DOES NOT MATTER what position, there is no "proper position". Also note the rotor rotation (ccw or cw).
Put the distributor cap back on and plug #1 spark plug wire in at the fart position you found. Continue with each plug wire per the 153624 firing order and in the correct rotation of the rotor you watched turning. Start that baby up and fine tune by twisting the distributor till it runs good.
Leave all the gadgets and doo-dads in the toolbox, just follow this simple method to get her running.
