Removing a distributer ought to be second nature for youse guys. Much easier to mess with internal parts like points and condenser.
SOP in tune up shops, where the guy who pulls it might not be the guy to re-install:
Remove the cap, bump the engine around until the rotor points straight ahead. ONE bolt in the distributor, how hard could it be? You'll need to re-time it anyhow, points are all different. Even worn / refiled needs re-timing from when they were new.
