The 318 poly is pretty heavy too. The 440 undoubtedly has a few pounds more. However, if memory serves me right, the torque of even a mild 440 can be about twice that of a stock 318 poly.

As for braking, a proportioning valve is definitely called for when the rear wheels lock up before the fronts (hint!). Otherwise, it's not required. Nice thing about them is that you can shift some of the braking to the rear when you're hauling a load.
