Folks covered below how Diesel Emissions Fluid is required to catalytically reduce NOx emissions. DEF is not really an additive. It goes in it's own tank and does not mix with the fuel stream.

Related to fuel system, the high pressure common rail diesels generally have 2 micron filtration instead of 10 micron like previous models. Diesel fuel specs have not yet changed to accommodate the higher demands on fuel cleanliness and stability. Sulfur was phased out in 2006 to accommodate the emission equipment that followed. Fuel you buy should already have additives in it to replace the lubricity lost in Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. You shouldn't have to add lubricitiy if you trust your supplier. As little as 2% biodiesel will also ensure adequate lubricity.
