Agreed. The pan isn't bent. Without plugs, it spins easily by hand. There is one spot in particular where you can feel and hear a gentle "clunk" as it's spun by hand. not too bad, but noticeable. Cranking it with the starter produced a clear, crank-synchronized knock. We worked oil through it a lot but haven't started it to heat it throughout. Any way we slice it, it'll be coming apart to be refreshed. It's a learning project for my son and the cost of rebuild will basically be seen as "tuition." I've gotten the valve covers off and it's looking great upstairs. It is a hydraulic lifter engine. The green paint on the right-hand side's intake valve springs is discolored but the left-hand springs look nearly new.
