No flow to the filter unless minimum oil pressure is available. Then the oil starts going to the by-pass filter and dropping back in to the pan. If more pressure happens, the valve becomes a relief valve, and dumps excess oil back into the pan.

A full flow system flows through the filter all the time, anf into the oil feed galleys. And if too much pressure dump, oil into the pan.,

If you screw up with the bypass addition, you migh shut the oil flow down to what gets through the 1/8" tubing, lunching your engine,

If I could, I would put the OE full flow system on. But do nothing until you understand the sytems.
