Hi Glenn,

When I rebuilt the 230 in my '49 PW, I installed VPW's cam and springs. I also shaved the head about 0.060", and I don't know how much it had been shaved before, but I did a volume measurement as best I could, and I think the compression ratio was around 8 or 8.25:1. This was about 13 - 14 years ago. The truck has 4.89 gears, and did before the engine rebuild, too.

The truck seemed to do pretty well on highways, including on small inclines. I was able to keep a steady 57 mph or so with minimal slowing down. It's hard to say how much better it did that before, but I think there was a significant improvement compared to the performance before the rebuild. Of course, how much of that was due to having a fresh rebuild vs. how much was because of the cam and head is hard to say.

In any case, that's my experience.

The reason I use past tense on most of this is because I've since discovered some issues with the engine and took it apart again a few years ago, and it's still in a state of disassembly, along with a couple of other areas of the truck. Too many other priorities in life, but next year, I plan to get back on it.
