look for a 435 with a designation of D. such as NP435D or D2, or D3. those are the close ratio tranny better for towing. All the old Muncie, NP and borg warner truck 4 speeds do not have synchro in first. your NP 420 has no synchro in 2nd wither. use engine rpms to shift down not the clutch. I would keep the poly. way better torque band than the LA318. I have towed with both and much prefer poly
