In years gone by, I ran the big 11x16 tires on my Chev. Worst thing I did for back road travel as when we had snow they would fill and slide like a sled or ride up onto the crust before breaking through. Around here, the loggers run 700x16 10ply on their pickups which stand up to the sharp rocks on roads and break through snow and mud for traction.
