Brian, wire the choke open, see how it goes.

As Milo says, there is a crossover passage under the manifold. Goes from side to side, gets hot from exhaust, and heats the choke coil. Choke will stay closed a loong time if it is plugged. I sure drilled out a lot of them in the 70s-80s.
