That's the engineering term for when the battery is disconnected from the rest of the electrical system. It's a Very Bad Thing. You can easily get voltage spikes of 50-100 volts that will fry all sorts of electronics. My big inverter at my cabin got fried last year when some tweaker stole the batteries and the solar panel didn't have a load any more. If the alternator is spinning, you want it connected to a battery, and if you can't do that, you want every other electrical thing in the truck disconnected from that alternator.
