OK, so to recap, during the 500 mile West Virginia Road Rally, Blueberry, my M37 started fine and ran fine on the flats, but as soon as a hill came into view, total dog, lack of power. Trucks with 230s and same gearing pulling away like I was sitting still. Matt fron VPW offereda couple of suggestions, advance the timing and or adjust the governor. I also got assorted timing suggestions from the Forum, from Metts suggestion of 4 degrees up to 10 degrees. I tried them all, settling with 8 degrees but none felt appreciably different. Saturday, after feeling there was not much more I could do with the timing I moved on the the governor. I backed the adjusting screw out a turn, and took it for a test run. A marked improvement. Triied a second turn, even better, a third turn brught the screw to the stops and it was the best yet. My test hill, which I was getting over in 4th gear at 30 mph, I was now going over at 35. Much better.
I decided to do a compression test, here are the results,
1; 105
2; 105
3; 30
4; 30
5; 105
6; 105
Conclusion, blown head gasket. I pulled the head, and sure enough a 1/4" gap between #3 and #4.
I installed a new gasket, liberally coated with copperkote, got everything buttoned up and go to start it, no go. Cranks right over but will not even try to fire.
I have determined that I am getting no spark at all. I have power to the distributor. I pulled the distributor and replaced the coil, points, condenser and rotor, put it all back in and still no spark. Batteries are fully charged.
I cant think why I am not getting spark, especially since it was running before I pulled the head which does not effect the distributor at all!
What gives?
