the metallurgy has not improved in engines since the 30s. it only has when it comes to aluminum. the cams were designed on these engines so they could run on 70 octane fuel. I am no cam designer but I would guess that is why the stock profiles are they way they are. These engines are still in use all over the planet on some level and use to be in a big way. fuel in the US pre war into late 40s was pretty bad and even wrose in many other countries. here is was around 70 octane in the 30s.
