is called "virga". I don't know why. I used to hear that term on the aircraft VHF weather broadcasts when I was a kid.

As for the hurricate/typhoon/cyclone thing, I've noticed in the last couple years NOAA refers to them all as "hurricanes". Must be some official edict. Until now, it was always a "hurricane" in the Atlantic, a "typhoon" in the Pacific and a "cyclone" in the Indian ocean. Of course Americans often call tornadoes "cyclones", and to a meteorologist every low pressure system is a "cyclone" even if it doesn't have destructive winds.
