There seems to be a body of evidence that the infection gets into cartilage and other tissues, and lays dormant. And can recur, like shingles and herpes. Meantime it's Cartilage Eating Bacteria. Maybe a boost of antibodies will wipe that out too?

My own history is the bull's eye rash at age 6 (1959). Wrong arm to be a small pox vac scar. Knees hurt at age ten, fixed with antibiotics. Knees act up every decade or so, but Lyme's antibodies test is negative. Now I have an unusual arthritis, joint space is good but the center is dissolved. Probably need a replacement knee.

Meantime 3-6 of my relatives have had the overt disease. Some in Colorodo, New Hampshire, and San Diego. We don't just 4x4 in the woods- hike, hunt, and a Msc science teacher at Beaverbrook, NH.

It has been around for ever. New World version used to be called "Montauk Knee". Current name is after Old Lyme, Ct. Proper name is Burgensis, after the scientist that isolated the germ.
