20 years ago I was told it would not work. I used "liquid nails" to put tile around my wood stove. I have dropped many chunks of wood on them and they never came loose. I filled in the gaps with sand mortar to get the right look. I just glued them to 1" thick plywood trimmed them in oak. They still look nice. That was on a floor a wall would be harder to do cause it needs to set up.
