Dodge started the naming convention based on the current models so W for 1941 and C for 1/2 ton. Then when the trucks were redesigned they just kept the WC model as the number after WC was the most important detail. By then there wasn't much else being built anyway and the military seems to have been more focused on the engine/series numbers. It feels like I see more books talk about T214 than WC-51.
