New vehicle use 23 gauge, older stuff used 19 guage.

But there is a whole mish mash of different thickness metal used in body building and the skin is generally the thinest metal used. They changed the composition of the metal over the years- i remember reading several reports that prohibited welding on some bodies- no clue what. this would have been back in 1984 or so. The same literature had the towing requirements for new vehicles- the rear hatch of a camaro had to be intact and closed to tow or the vehicle needed to be flat decked.
As to the dana 44 it works pretty good as is. But if you are going to bigger tires or heavier loads the poor axle is at its limits.
