A lot of old gearbox castings had uncontrolled dimensions inside in places where it didn't matter (for assembly, at least). I've run into places like that on various gear boxes. The service manual for the old 7U series D4 cats, where it gets into replacing the steering brake bands includes advice to "use a cold chisel to remove a projection of metal" if it interferes with getting the old band out. I guess they discovered that part of the casting was a bit too un-controlled.
